A wooded paradise, that’s a must for nature lovers, backpackers, and trekkers looking for adventure on India’s west coast… Looking for a perfect getaway? Then Silvassa, the capital of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, sandwiched between the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, may be just what you’re looking for. Derived from the Portuguese word ‘Silva’ which  means ‘wood’, Silvassa is known for its lush green hills, verdant rolling plains,  natural beauty, numerous sparkling water bodies and exquisite gardens.

While this is definitely a place to enjoy nature at its best, where one can relax in the numerous gardens, or enjoy the deer sanctuary or the lion safari the place offers, Silvassa is also known for some wonderful attractions such as its interesting tribal museum, numerous Roman-Catholic churches,  tourists complexes & more.

Definitely an all time favorite, the Tribal museum is home to a large variety of tribal artifacts, where one can find out more about the tribes inhabiting this union territory & their unique lifestyles. From hunting tools to exotic tribal ornaments, masks, daggers, rural armors, shields and even musical instruments one can find them all here. A treasure trove one can even find life size models on display portraying the tribal way of life. Tribes celebrating their life, photographs of ceremonious such as tribal weddings, etc adorn the walls of the museum’s gallery.

Built by the Portuguese settlers in 1886-89, The Church of Our Lady, a century old church is known for its marvelous architecture, excellent motifs and magnificent arches, and is an excellent example  of old Portuguese architecture.

While some say it translates to ‘green forest’, the Hirwa Van nestled in the Piparia hills,  is the entry point at Silvassa which is also said to be named after a tribal deity ‘Hirwa’ the green goddess. A splendid garden, this garden has it all from captivating flowers beds, manicured lawns, to the care taken while decorating it, to give it a rustic look. Here one can find a range of water bodies such as brooks and streams, even a dazzling waterfall. While a play area keeps the kids busy, in this park  adults too can indulge in a bit of play – for it offers a variety of adventure sports such as water sports and even camping facilities! This place makes a great picnic spot.

Situated around 4 kms from Silvassa, here’s a Bollywood favorite, one which tourists would have surely seen  in many a Bollywood movie. The Island Garden is an exquisite garden against the backdrop of the crystal clear water of the beautiful Vanganga Lake, known for its wide array of blossoming flowers, green trees, romantic and picture perfect setting of a bridge over a lake. A mention must made of the  thatched huts that add to its appeal! Besides the beauty this garden offers, tourists here can also enjoy paddle boats while the health conscious can avail of  its well laid jogging track.

Another well-laid park overlooking the river is the Vandhara Udyan, a magnificent garden known for its beautiful lawns, flowering plants and pavilions for  visitors to relax and  enjoy the cool breeze the river provides.

While the above parks are great places to enjoy Mother Nature at its best, delighting adults and children alike is the Lion Safari Wildlife Park that makes up approx. 25 hectares of the Dadra & Nagar Haveli Wildlife Sanctuary. Home to the endangered Asiatic lion (Panthera Leo), the safari that tourists can take covers around 3Km inside this zone.  The sanctuary is also home to tribal populations that are dependent on the sanctuary for their daily needs.

Another must that should figure on your itinerary here is the Mini Zoo and Bal Udyan, that provides ‘children’ of all ages an opportunity to experience a wide variety of various species of animals and birds. From mischievous monkeys and huge crocodiles to pythons and birds of all colours, the Mini Zoo and Bal Udyan is a prominent landmark of Silvassa that also houses a leisure park for kids which comprises of swings, merry-go- rounds and other play items

While the parks are great places to hang out, don’t forget the mesmerizing Vanganga Lake, a favorite amongst photographers, filmmakers  and honeymooners and the delightful paddle rides its pristine waters offers. And if  all that boating has given you an appetite, then head for the eateries on its shores where one can indulge in some scrumptious delicacies.

Around 45 Km and a scenic drive away from Silvassa, is Dudhni  a great getaway known for its natural beauty. A wonderful picnic spot, one can get a magnificent view of the Madhuban Dam over the Damanganga River here. Adding to the fun is the water scooter facilities that are available for those sporting enthusiasts. Here one can catch some mouthwatering sea foods at the many eating joints at reasonable rates.

Another wonderful getaway just about 25 km. from Silvassa is the lazy town of Khanvel, surrounded by densely forested mountains. From here one can get some scenic views of the undulating meadows below. The views of the beautiful cottages  amidst the terraced hills looks like scenery just out of a post card. Adding to the beauty of the place is the tranquil presence of the meandering river Sakartod.

Just about 2 km. from Khanvel is the Tapovan Tourist Complex in Bindrabin, a famous tourist attraction that consists of an interesting amusement park, a restaurant and comfortable cottages offering all kinds of modern facilities. While the amusement park is an exciting way to pass time, try out the famous temple of Lord Siva at Bindrabin too.

While the place may not be the perfect shopping destination, one can still find items like woven baskets and bamboo mats, articles made of greenish gold torpe grass and leather slippers here.

A place to enjoy nature, this sleepy town with its soothing sylvan surroundings and pleasant climate is definitely a refreshing change for those on India’s west coast looking at getting away from the hustle and bustle city life offers.
