Salt Lake City is called the supplementary pair of lungs of the City of Kolkata. At a time when the whole city was gasping in congestion, the industrialists were paying no attention to and the inhabitants were suffering from myriad health issue, the satellite city was built up to supply the requisite oxygen to the century old city. Built in 1960s’, the place remained far-flung from the city heart for many days. It was not in the picture that people were akin to build houses in the township. But with demand of time, the city started to become a phenomenon in the history of Kolkata, Bidhannagar.

Today, this is the most planned section of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. The brilliantly designed township enjoys its existence amidst lush green. It is divided into several blocks or 23 wards, if you think from the administrative perspective. The township is now a home to millions of people who once used to live in the main city and they have literally built a slice of Kolkata outside Kolkata. Salt lake is outside Kolkata in the sense it is ruled by a separate administrative body, its own Bidhannagar Municipality. But its an integral part of Kolkata. The parks, lanes, sidewalks, islands, all are so giftedly planned that this is the most-desirable place for any outsider to stay. Malls, hospitals, five-star hotels, the city is absolutely self-sufficient. Asia’s largest stadium, Yubabharati Krirangan is situated here.

But the most interesting part of the city is probably the IT sector, a sector that is growing in leaps and bounds and showing dream to all the residents of Kolkata. If s al lake as served as an oxygen cylinder to the whole city, this IT sector, an vital part of the township is the boost up to the socio-economic structure of the city of Kolkata. Salt Lake City

, in that sense, is a miniature Kolkata with new horizons.
