Goa Carnival: Enjoy Sun, Sand and Song!

Map of Goa

The month of February commemorates the Carnival in the beautiful land of Goa. For 3 days and nights the streets in Goa come alive with joy and color. Held in the middle of February, the Goa Carnival, which is a weeklong festival, is the time for vivacious processions, thrumming of guitars, floats, dancing, singing, merry making and continuous celebration. From the view point of tourism capacities, the Carnival in Goa can be said to be a complete seller!

Among the several festivals and celebrations that take place in Goa, Goa Carnival happens to be the most awaited festival. The ‘Carnival’ is unique to Goa and was started by the Portuguese, by whom Goa was ruled for more than 500 years. Although, this three day festival is primarily celebrated by the Christians, yet it also involves people from various other religions. Further, though initially only the local people took part in the celebration, later on the grandeur and attraction of the carnival, spread all across the country

Though it started as a celebration enjoyed only by the local population, it has today crossed the state frontiers and attracts thousands of people from all over the country. The Goa Carnival is being celebrated since the 18th century.

The carnival is intended to be a merrymaking orgy right before the austere forty days of Lent. Long parades are held throughout Goa, characterized by dances, bands and floats throughout the night, and grand balls that are organized in the evenings. The carnival wraps off with the popular red-and-black dance organized by Club National in Panajim.

The carnival doesn’t take place in any other city or parts of India and in Goa also in the twilight years of Portuguese rule, the carnival was in the declining state. However, with the liberation of the state of Goa, the Carnival once again revived and was welcomed by the people greatly. From being nearly on the verge of declining, the festival at present attracts numerous people to Goa, thereby giving a boost to the tourism industry of the region.

The best part of the Goan Carnival is indulge in fun, singing, merrymaking, dancing, feasting, etc. leaving behind all the worries of harsh reality, just before Easter Sunday. The whole Goa looks even more lively and colorful on this occasion.  The entire region is decorated with colorful ribbons, streamers, papers and balloons. People from all community, caste and creed participate in the fun parades, making their own tableaus that depict various themes and representations.

What Does ‘Carnival’ Mean?

The word ‘carnival’ is supposed to be a derivative of the Latin word ‘Carne’, which means meat, and ‘Vale’, which means ‘good-bye’. The word is also linked by many to the word ‘Carnislevamen’, that is ‘the pleasures of meat’. It focuses on the joy of having meat during the celebration, prior to the abstinence that would during the 40 days Lent.

According to some other hypothesis, the word ‘carnival’ came from ‘Carrus Navalis’, meaning the boat-shaped, horse-drawn carriage that was made to parade in the Roman festival, called Saturnalia, honoring the Saturn. It carried people dressed in fancy dresses and masks, singing salacious songs.

History of Goa Carnival

The history of the Goa carnival dates back to about 500 years. Introduced by Portuguese, the tendency of enjoying Carnival with hedonistic satisfaction goes back to the period of ancient Greece and Rome. With time, the Spanish and the Portuguese came to know about the carnival. When the Portuguese chose Goa as the region to set up their colony, they brought with them the idea of carnival. Since that period, the carnival has been a regular feature happening in the captivating land of Goa

The carnival was first hosted by Brazil, which was the 1st nation to play host of an event of this sort. This was the starting point from where the tradition of carnival got spread in other corners of the world.  While carnival in Brazil continues for 5 days right before Ash Wednesday, the Rio de Janeiro carnival means complete freedom to everyone. Carnivals are a craze in places such as Munich, Paris, Cologne, Rome, Buenos-Aires, Venice, Montevideo and Nice.

On the occasion of carnival in Goa, a ‘King of pandemonium’ called ‘King Momo’ is chosen who presides over the festivity and announces the opening of the festivity, the carnival. According to Christianity, a period of 40 days of penance and fasting prior to Easter Monday is called “Lent”. It is meant to purify the soul. The Goan Carnival generally commences on Fat Tuesday, better known as “Shrove Tuesday”. It is right before the Ash Wednesday, which commences with the 1st day of Lent.

The carnival upholds the very fun-loving culture, which characterizes Goa. It started as a rowdy celebration by the ancient rulers. Flour, lemons, eggs, mud, sand-filled gloves, oranges, dirty water, glue and other liquids were thrown at the passersby. Used pans, pots and kitchen utensils were thrown from the windows. Maybe this was done in order to get rid of the dirty and old right before the Lent. Fierce battles were witnessed on the streets, with eggs, wax lemons, plaster-of-Paris corncobs and beans. Brooms and wooden spoons were also used. People engaged themselves into unchecked eating. They gorged on various kinds of rich food items and drinks. The carnival in Goa is actually a reflection of this original form of carnivals prevalent in ancient times.

In its early days, the Goa Carnival was the occasion where the white masters and the black saves imitated each other while the natives watched in despair and wonder. The whites masked themselves as the black slaves and the black slaves put on their faces, plasters of flour and dressed in high battens. Over the time, this ancient crude imitation changed into a kind of social satire.

In the year 1922, the then Governor General of Goa, Dr. Jaime de Morais changed the whole area near ‘Palacio do Hidalcao’ to a ‘fairy land’ by waging a fun war with the kids of Panjim, from his palace by using bags of perfumed powder, flowers, powder bombs and sugarplums. Balloons were seen bobbling up in the air leaving behind multicolored trails. Colorful procession with horse-drawn carriages, beautifully bedecked bullock carts and attractively decorated floats were the attractive features during these three days.  Goa Carnival, then, was not limited to celebrations. It was an emotional moment, a mood where people danced and sang throughout the day and night. Those who are not familiar with the Goan culture are sometimes surprised to see how the people in Goa dances, sings and involves in merry making, continuously for three days.

Goa Carnival: Enjoy Sun, Sand and Song!

Plays, dances, songs, impromptu mockery of the establishment are some of the things that you would come across at the Goa Carnival. Floats portraying popular berceuse, nursery rhymes create a fanciful and multicolored sight on the roads of Goa. People dress themselves in colorful costumes and sometimes masks. They participate in various cultural programs and competitions. On this occasion of joy and entertainment, people throw colors on each other and not eggs, fruit, flour, that were previously used.

In the villages of Goa, the carnival however, assumes an indigenous flavor. Goan villages, however, the festivities have a more indigenous flavor. Although, a festival particularly meant for the Christians, The only relevance that the carnival has to Christianity, is the fact that it takes place just before Lent. Presently, the festival bears no religious undertone and is more a cultural celebration.

Among the enthusiastic celebrations in Goa, the Goan Carnival is also among the favorites, for the numerous travelers all across the globe, who dot Goa. The carnival is popularly known as the riotous joyfulness. Once at the Goa Carnival, you would surely be entertained to the fullest. Beautiful melodies, amazing dance and lip-smacking food- that is what is waiting for you at the Goa Carnival. The Goa Carnival is the blend of religion and culture, which is very rarely witnessed in any other corner of the country. It is the opportunity, where people engage in spreading joy and love to everyone. So don’t think twice to be a part of this amazingly beautiful festival- Goa Carnival: Enjoy Sun, Sand and Song!

Goa Map

The 41st International Film Festival of India, also known as IFFI hit the beautiful land of Goa on 22 November, 2010 and will continue till 2nd of December, 2010.   This International Film Festival of India is among the world’s oldest film festivals. It was 1st opened in the year 1952. Although the festival had a normal run for 2 decades, it then started facing several problems. Just like the historic film festivals of Venice and Cannes, which had their own share of ups and downs, IFFI has also seen its share of disturbances.

In the year 2004, Goa was selected as the permanent venue for the International Film Festival of India, by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in association with the Directorate of Film Festivals. Initially, the festival started well on the banks of River Mandovi amidst the Goan beauty, heritage, mirth and melodies. However, over the years, different set of problems have cropped in. The State Government desperately wanted to give the festival a distinct persona. Each of the world festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Melbourne, Marrakech, Tokyo, Dubai, Deauville and many more had a title that conveyed the name of the town where it takes place. So it was claimed on the part of Goa that the International Film Festival of India should also be called the Goa International Film Festival. This coupled with several other problems from various sectors have never made it easy for the festival.

However, regardless of all these, the festival seems to be one of the brightest, this year. Many well-known and popular film stars from all across the globe have graced India’s 41st International film festival, 2010, by making their presence felt. 18 movies that include three Indian movies have been short listed for the film fare award competition. A total of 5 awards worth Rs 90 million will be presented. This amount is supposedly the highest for any kind of film festival.  Further, it is also the 1st time that 2 additional ‘Silver Peacock awards will also be presented for the best actor and actress award.

Numerous personalities and common man from all corners have gathered in Goa on the occasion of this film festival. The jury of the festival comprises 20 members. The chief member of the Jury Board is director Jersy Ansak. Director and actress Revathy is also there. Other members of the jury include Australian legendary actor Mick Molloy, Emmy award winning Canadian filmmaker Sturla Gunnars and French filmmaker Oliver Pere. During this 10 days festival extravaganza, about 300 films from all across the globe, i.e. about 61 nations will be showcased for the viewers, at the Goa Film Festival of 2010. Five Malayalam films such as Shyamaprasad’s “Electra”, Lenin Rajendran’s “Makaramanje” etc will also be played. One of the attractions and main highlights of this festival will be American Film Maker, Jim Jarmusch’s retrospective movie. The numerous movies to be screened at the International Film Festival of India will take us through a journey of amazingly beautiful and diverse districts coupled with the magical moments and fascinating tales.

While talking about this amazing film festival, Manoj Srivastava, the CEO, Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) contended that Goa will soon become an entertainment hub due to the growing recognition of IFFI as one of the ‘International cinema destination’. The co-hosts of the film festival, DFF and ESG have emphasized on the promotion of Short Films made by the upcoming talented Directors besides premiering movies of noted filmmakers. The legendary spirit of celebration and hospitality, the food and shopping extravaganzas and many more will also be showcased by ESG in all its magnificence.

The 41st edition of the International Film Festival of Goa or IFFI will see the screening of European and North American Films, unlike the other editions of the festival. The motive behind screening these films is to give them the importance and worth that they deserve but sometimes don’t receive enough publicity in their own country.

21 non-feature and 26 feature films from the promising and talented film makers from across India will be played for the audience. The feature films include Abohomaan, Maner Manush, Achin Paakhi, Ami Aadu (Bengali), Wake-up-Sid, Paa (Hindi), Three Idiots, Kaal Chilambu (Malayalam), Me Sindhuthai Sapkal (Marathi), Ravanan (Tamil), Shabari (Kannada), Swamyamsiddha (Odiya). From the year 2010, a section on Academy Interest will be introduced. Special screening of the film, “Peepli Live”, Oscar entrant for India, this year, has also been organized, with the aim to provide an international platform to the Indian Films. Three Indian Movies will make it to the category of International competition in the film festival, from the year 2010.
